Announcements and Information Linda Cuff opened the meeting and members introduced themselves. Spring Conference Exploratorium Leanne discussed the upcoming spring conference Exploratorium to be held May 18th in the Stephen Schwartzman Building at NYPL. It will be a presentation of best practices with 40 tables. Registration is now available on PROTRAX and 66 librarians have registered, thus far. Barbara said that we will need the full spectrum of grade levels and strands to show all that is happening out in the field, and that all Council members are encouraged to apply. Elizabeth added that the LAC will recruit two people to present. There will be two parts scheduled with presentations by Olga Nesi and Stephanie Rosalia and opportunities for participants to explore. Common Core Alignment During the February break, there was a meeting to align the IFC with the Common Core. This was organized by our standards for every grade in ELA, Social Studies and Science. It allows teachers to see how the library can teach the skills in the Common Core. Also created was the Common Core College and Career Readiness Skills Learned Through the Library Instructional Program, which is aligned with the IFC Standards. Robert suggested that we also create a searchable database to be used by teachers and librarians with links to relevant curriculum sites, such as, sites to use for research on global warming. Meeting with SCA Lynne reported on a recent meeting attended by members of SLS and individuals from SCA, DOE operations, and some architects. A Powerpoint featuring the Chelmsford Library in Massachusetts was presented to highlight the needs of libraries during renovations. Picturing America and New Yorkers Read Grant Melissa reported that Picturing America/Picturing New York, a conference on looking at American history through art, will be held on April 14th at the American Museum of Natural History. Registration is available to teachers and supervisors. The New Yorkers Read grant, funded by Macy's, will provide winners with 207 non-fiction titles. Students will receive Passports to track their reading, including why they read, and become reading ambassadors. All materials chosen were professionally reviewed. The New Yorkers Read wiki includes the list of titles, postcards, banners and bookmarks, translated in 8 languages. Elizabeth made a motion to accept the minutes of our last meeting, which was accepted by Janna and seconded by Maureen. The minutes are posted on the Council wiki. Nominations for slate of officers for 2011-2013 The following members were nominated for positions on the Council: Linda Cuff, President Janna Robbins, Vice President Christine Hatami, Secretary Linda asked if SLS would be hiring a coordinator to replace Judith? Barbara responded that their funding had been cut and the decision was made not to hire until September. Recruiting will begin this spring. Fall Conference Melissa said that they are looking for a new space for the conference and that they would like to expand vendor support. Barbara added that they are brainstorming for the keynote speaker. Some possible topics include Common Core, e-books, technology. The role of the keynote speaker is to get people to think, to inspire, to be provocative. The message must be positive, visionary and practical. Beth added that, as professionals, we need to know what is out there, we need to be lifelong learners. Linda said that libraries are about equity. Library closures are happening mostly in urban centers. Libraries are democratic spaces. Barbara added that we teach skills, which is an equity issue, as well. This supports the argument for the library as a Learning Commons. It is also a virtual learning commons. Robert added that libraries provide services for immigrants, new learners, citizenship. He asked, who in the industry is talking about 21st Century skills for the workplace? Linda suggested that we put this discussion on the Council wiki. Barbara said that we need to offer something that has appeal beyond the library community. Linda reminded us that the Common Core would be a major issue next year for school administrators. Projects of Council Members Linsa reported that New Visions has just awarded e-readers to five Campus schools. It is part of a Pilot Program on the use of e-readers in school libraries. The schools are MLK, Columbus, Jefferson, Port Richmond, and Thurgood Marshall. Robert has 40 ipads and needs to create a roll-out plan for how to integrate these in a large high school. He has also been asked to develop a collection for new immigrants and is looking for dual language Arabic books.
Barbara stated that there would be vendors at the fall conference with dual language books.
The meeting was adjorned at 3:00pm.
